Barwell’s is one of the very few all female accountancy practices in the country. We are far from being “just another boring firm of accountants”, and we all lead full and active lives outside of work. Here’s a little bit about our team…
Nickie Barwell FCCA
Nickie established Barwell Accountants (previously known as Bantofts Accountancy) in 2009. Nickie grew up on the family farm near Wisbech and has spent most of her life in the area. She has worked in Fenland and West Norfolk for 12 years, during which time she gained her Chartered Certified Accountant qualification.
Nickie has always been involved in commerce. “I was brought up to be involved in business, with the family farm and also our family haulage business too, which is an area my brothers have developed as well”, she says. Her expertise has broadened now to include an in-depth knowledge of the primary business sectors in the area.
Outside of work, Nickie has two children and thoroughly enjoys the bustle of family life. She enjoys going to the gym and skiing, but one of her less physical activities is baking – keep an eye out on our social media feeds for examples of the cakes which go down so very well in the office!
Nickie and her family are keen cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts. “There aren’t many outdoor activities I’d not have a go at”, says Nickie. Sounds like a challenge!
Claire Gayton FCCA (nee Elston)
Claire joined Barwells in 2011 as Accounts and Taxation Manager. She has worked in accountancy since 1994, gaining her qualification as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1998.
Claire has a deep corporate knowledge and is most at home dealing with the complex accountancy needs of larger companies and their owners. “It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I do really enjoy getting immersed in the detail of big business finances”, admits Claire. She works closely with many of our larger businesses, providing support in their current accounting affairs as well as forecasting any forward planning needs they may have.
Claire is married with 2 young boys. In her free time, she enjoys days out with her family and tries (but doesn’t always succeed) to keep fit.
Jaclyn became our Payroll and Book-keeping manager when she joined Barwells in 2013, where she has responsibility for this critical function for a fast growing group of customers. Jaclyn prides herself in being ultra-organised, and ensures that all the on-time tasks are planned to suit the customer’s needs.
“I know just how important it is for a business that their staff are paid on time and accurately. It gives me a real sense of satisfaction to get all the tasks completed on time so that our customers can concentrate on running their businesses”, says Jaclyn. Whether it is weekly, fortnightly, four weekly or monthly payroll, or subcontractor returns, Jaclyn tackles the tasks with enthusiasm and concentration, providing comfort to our customers and making their lives just a bit easier.
Jaclyn has recently moved into her first home and her free time is currently occupied with decorating and home making. “Deep joy” is her most quotable comment on this topic.
Katy Wicks FCCA (nee Barwell)
Katy qualified as a chartered certified accountant in 2006 and joined Barwells in 2010 as an Accounts and Taxation Manager.
Katy enjoys dealing with many of our owner-managed companies, ensuring they are set up and run in a tax efficient manner to best meet the needs of the business owners. She also has a solid understanding of land and property affairs.
Married with two young children, Katy enjoys watching her husband and sons play for Wisbech Rugby Club. Katy enjoys sport herself, especially skiing – and is also a keen cook.
Samantha Wheatley (nee West-Robinson)
During the summer of 2015 Sam joined our team. Sam, who works with the book keeping and payroll department, has experience in payroll and book keeping having helped her husband and his business for many years. She supports and assists Jaclyn in looking after our customers’ payroll runs and book keeping preparation. Sam is also a great support to the whole team providing administration assistance.
Sam is AAT trained and enjoys working on Sage software in the business to report and record our customers’ affairs. Sam is also usually the first person you will speak to if you call the office taking calls and redirecting them to the right team member.
Sam is also a mother of two girls and lives on a local farm with her family. Her free time is often taken up with looking after her family and her extended family of horses. Sam breeds miniature horses.
Lucy Davis FCCA (nee Robinson)
Lucy is a qualified chartered certified accountant and works in our accounts and taxation department. Lucy, who qualified in 2010 and joined our team in late summer of 2015, has a broad experience in accounts for all business types and sizes. She works alongside the others in the department preparing accounts tax returns. Lucy also looks after some of our clients meeting their management needs and visits them regularly to provide management account support.
Lucy has always lived locally and is recently married. Lucy enjoys socialising and spending time with friends and family. Lucy is busy renovating her property and is looking forward to getting back into her fitness and sports once the project is complete.
